I don't really understand how the letters and Numbers make up American
and Other Countries call signs... but New Zealand  ones are made up by

ZL = New Zealand
4 = The region of New Zealand (numbers 1 - 4) (I'm in the southern
region) Although you'll sometimes get special service call signs for
contests etc with a 5 or a 6 here.
TUX are the personal parts of the call sign. But there could be a
ZL1TUX or ZL2TUX etc
Before we could use HF in NZ we had to pass the morse test etc as part
of the licence... but now that is not needed. My call sign used to be
a T call... or Training one... but now that doesn't matter
