If I had one gripe about using mixers with USB audio I/O, it's that you don't get the advantage of Rivendell's ability to deliver multiple audio outputs. Everything squirts down one hose. For set-and-forget studio operations, that is probably desirable.
But say you wanted your regular program log to play on one preset fader of your mixer and wanted some degree of control over the Soundpanel so you can hit a Weather Intro and fade it down manually. You're not going to get that with a USB connection feeding a single fader on the mixer. Sure, you can "write" a fade into Rivendell. But if you're going to do that, why have a mixer? For capable audio performance, I do like what the M-Audio 1010LT soundcard offers: 10-ins/10-outs that can be assigned however you want them. The audio specs may not rival what the AudioScience cards have, but its still a lot cleaner and purer than whatever gear we used to put up with in our studios before. It annoys me how many consoles have so called VU meters and they are not. Hence my attraction to the ARC with mechanical meters. Another console I'm looking at is the Merlin 8 from Elan Audio (manufactured in Australia). It's the most affordable for analogue small scale. The next in line is the Oxygen 3 ST from Axel, since it has a couple of hybrids already in it. I've set those up and used them before but I can't remember how the metering acts in them. I do like the idea of on-board sound cards though, either that or I'll put an AES/EBU card in Rivendell and use an external converter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Peterson" <[email protected]> To: "User discussion about the Rivendell Radio Automation System" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2012 12:10 AM Subject: Re: [RDD] Arrakis USB Sound Card > Forgot to mention I was recently loaned an AudioArts AIR-1 -- a > small-scale broadcast mixer along the same lines as the Arrakis ARC-8 with > some differences -- and will be plugging that puppy's USB port into > Rivendell as well. > > -AP > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Gavin Stephens" <[email protected]> > To: "Rivendell Users Group" <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 6:27:19 PM > Subject: [RDD] Arrakis USB Sound Card > > Anyone got Rivendell going with an Arrakis ARC-10 series with the built in > USB sound card? > > Cheers, > Gavin. > > _______________________________________________ > Rivendell-dev mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.rivendellaudio.org/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev > _______________________________________________ > Rivendell-dev mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.rivendellaudio.org/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev _______________________________________________ Rivendell-dev mailing list [email protected] http://lists.rivendellaudio.org/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev _______________________________________________ Rivendell-dev mailing list [email protected] http://lists.rivendellaudio.org/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev
