Ubuntu is very similar to Debian 6, the package names will be different but apt sorts that out. As far as I remember, the configure bugs on 12.04 were fixed but I'm not 100% sure. The steps for mp3 support and adding debian multimedia are not needed as Ubuntu ships these in the repos by default.
