You definitely want to have the filesystem unmounted when you do it -- *severe* 
data corruption can result otherwise.  Boot it into rescue mode and do it from 
there.

Ext3 should be fine.  Ext4 is for all intents and purposes the same thing, just 
with larger absolute limits.
