I think you need to use the game port or GPIO cards if you want dry hard wired 
contacts such as a button, directly. 

Serial usually means using a broadcast console or switcher that also has a 
serial port and can send strings of data not just a dry contact to talk to RD. 
With serial in RD, you use a macro cart to tell it to set a serial trap waiting 
for the data that matches a user defined string to arrive via the serial port, 
and what action you want it to take once recieved.
