It’s not really about sonic improvements.  With modern oversampling techniques, 
the difference between 44.1k vs 48k is inaudible to the human ear (Neil Young 
notwithstanding).  Rather, it’s mostly about math: 48000 is *vastly* easier to 
factor in all sorts of useful ways to make it scale into a DSP system, whereas 
44100 is a plain pain in the rear (just take a look at the ‘padding bit’ 
functionality in the MPEG-1 spec for an example of how mind boggling this can 
become).
