I haven't been around long enough to know what it was like "back then", but I can only imagine what it was like.

From a newbie perspective, the appliance DVD was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I find Rivendell easy to use and very intuitive. The great majority of questions I have had have pretty much been non Rivendell questions...like redundancy (Raid), email failure notifications (postfix), networking, etc. Although they could fall under the wiki and/or forums I suppose, there is plenty of info out there on these subjects already on the underlying OS.

I am up for anything, so I will "go with the flow", but to get an operational system going off the appliance is pretty easy. Although some hand-holding might be required to the absolute newcomer, it really isn't so bad. Maybe an entire "rewrite" of the wiki wouldn't be necessary. Maybe a couple new sections "Paravel Appliance v1", "Paravel Appliance v2", etc. I don't know, just throwing that out there.

I tend to agree. The Google move would just be to better maintain the existing
mailing list [Rivendell-dev].

Cheers!
