Hi, I don't know what the equivalent package on the appliance CD is, however on Ubuntu installs with M-Audio Delta cards I've always had to install the envy24 control stuff, including the envy24 mixer.
With the m-audio delta cards most** of the difficulties have turned out to be settings which have been set to an incorrect setting, causing incorrect responses. Even when stuff looks okay in alsamixer, I've found that it isn't always correct, and the envy24 mixer app can get you to any of the card-level settings to fix difficulties. ** I mention most - the m-audio delta 1010, with the rack mountable breakout box - there are 2 capacitors on the main power-in line inside the breakout box which seem to like to fail, causing audio to die (I've had 3 of these all fail in the same way). Replacing those 2 capacitors generally fixes the problem and restores audio to your breakout box.
