It's not entirely clear to me how your testing setup is arranged, but
are you by any chance monitoring the serial stream via minicom(1) at the
same time as Rivendell is running the serial trap? Doing so will likely
produce the exact symptoms you describe. You want to ensure that RD has
exclusive access to the serial device.
