The problem with the Appliance approach is that the install CD has to anticipate your hardware. If the prebuilt versions of Rivendell, its prerequisites, and the operating system don't play nice with your hardware, it won't work and can't easily be fixed. I've run into situations where sound cards, network adapters, etc. weren't recognized, and one case where everything was recognized but the ASI sound card wouldn't produce audio.

I have found that installing Rivendell from source, under Debian 7, works reliably. When I tried CentOS, I found that many prerequisites weren't available via yum and had to be built from source, eating up hours of my time. Under Debian, everything but the asihpi driver is available from the Debian or Tryphon repositories. It just works, the first time, with no screaming, yelling, or hair-pulling.

Of course, when Debian 8 comes out, all that may change.

A thought: does the Appliance CD come with a recommended hardware list?

Rob,

No, I've blasted enough time trying to get Rivendell to run on this
computer.  My plan is to load it up with Windows 7 & BSI WaveCart to replace
the current control room computer running Windows XP & WaveCart.

I can then take the old computer and try Rivendell/CentOS 6.5 on it.  If it
works, I can start using that and wait for the beta version of Rivendel
appliance to become usable.

That's not an alsactl issue, then; the OS isn't recognizing your
sound cards. Do they need alsa-firmware?

Sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and buy Audioscience.
