I have a client who has three AM's targeting Brazilian listeners in
greater Boston and Cape Cod. There are three studios that regularly go on
the air on any combination of the stations, and there are feeds from
outside locations that arrive on several different Barix boxes.
I set up a Broadcast Tools 16x4 switcher to handle all the audio sources
and destinations; this switcher is controlled by one of three Rivendell
hosts that also feed inputs to the switcher. The other Rivendell hosts.
including one on Cape Cod, communicate with the switcher via RML commands
to the "master" Rivendell host.
Outputs 1, 3, and 4 of the switcher each feed a radio station; output 2
backfeeds a Tieline codec used for remote broadcasts. Each Rivendell host
runs a log for one of the stations. When it is time to put, say, source 1
on output (station) 3, the computer running the log for output 3 executes
an RML command to do so, and breaks that connection via another RML
command when it's time for that particular program to end. The same source
may feed one, two, or three stations, and sometimes more than one source
feeds the same station.
So far this has worked very well. As demand for airtime grows on Cape Cod,
I'm anticipating new challenges, such as real-time monitoring of a station
from a studio outside its coverage area. We already have a weekly program
arriving from a Tieline codec in Brazil.
