 Truthfully, my CentOS-7 installs were done when Fred was
 on-site ( an advantage it's sometimes nice to have ) so I'm not
 sure if it's part of a standard install, or something Fred added.

 yum list shows that it's xfce4 and came from the epel repository.
 
 It's missing a few things that gnome3 has, like the sound speaker test,
 but nothing serious, and there's always the option to log out, click
 the google gear, log back in with gnome, find what you wanted....
 OK, that's starting to sound like a lot of work.
 Yeah, gnome3 is not the end-all be-all, unless you're playing follow
 the leader with Micro$oft, and you're not the leader.

 The software manager is apparently something in gnome, though
 accessible through the xfce menus, except that it's gone in 7.2.

 Bottom line is that XFCE4 works very well, and is quite comfortable
 for me, a pretty dedicated FVWM user.
