Rich, That does sound like an apache timeout issue. By default Apache usually has a timeout of 300 (5 minutes) which is not long enough for importing long audio files.
Myself I've gone with 1800 (30 minutes), some have gone with 1200 (20 minutes). Increase your timeout and restart Apache - I'd bet that your problem will be gone.
