Most likely, it will work. Linux is a lot less picky about hardware. Having said that, there are some systems and kernel options that can make it incompatible. I would try it. There are several ways to clone a hard drive. If they are identical drives, you can just dd or cp or rsync the /dev/ file. ( I'd use dd, but be aware one wrong keystroke can be instantly fatal ) You can build the "backup" machine, boot it with a Knoppix CD or DVD, and clone the drive in-place using rsync. ( or a dd | ssh arrangement ) I'm not immediately aware of any GUI tools to do it, as I wouldn't use them. If they are not identical, then some mods to the command options might be in order, such as a dd tree copy rather than a hardware binary copy. The short answer is yes, and it more than likely will just work. The safe answer is to start googling cloning a hard drive under linux, and read a bunch of 'em, all with a grain of salt as "they" say. An even safer way, is to do a Rivendell backup/restore after you install the OS on the new box. -- Cowboy http://cowboy.cwf1.com Time is nature's way of making sure that everything doesn't happen at once. _______________________________________________ Rivendell-dev mailing list [email protected] http://caspian.paravelsystems.com/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev
