They loosely model the ballistics of a 'VU' meter (with emphasis on

They have never (intentionally, at least) been anything other than -16.
More precisely: a steady-state tone encoded at a level of -16 dBFS will
give a meter indication of '0' in Rivendell.

Neither. But you can help change this by sending a couple of sample
files with known values.

Several, such as the '--relink-audio' switch in rddbcheck(8)/rddbmgr(8)
and the inclusion of 'rdxl' chunks in all audio exports. However, there
are no metadata in the files comprising the internal audio store
itself, for very intentional design reasons that have been gone into at
length many times here already. Rivendell is a database-centric system.
If you lose the DB, you'll be up the proverbial creek. Thus, make sure
that you've got a good backup scheme in place (which includes
periodically verifying that you can actually *recover* the DB from your
backup).
