I don't really have anything to say about the build process, but I am concerned about the group dynamics. This is the type of situation in which being scattered around the world with only e-mail communication may hurt.
With frequent face-to-face interaction, it is easier to maintain the feeling that we are a mutually supportive team with respect for every member. A casual non-work discussion in the lunch room can ease any tensions produced by the inevitable technical and process disagreements among people who care about a project.
I can see the problem, but don't know a low cost solution other than to be aware of it, and to be very careful not to take technical disagreements personally.
