OK, I unmounted /dev/fd. rkhunter then runs fine.

The one thing I notice though is that rkh didn't explicitly check the
log files mentioned in the error messages I was getting. Do you have
any idea why with fdesc enabled it is suddenly looking in /var/log?

In any case, I myself enabled fdesc in fstab; it is needed by
(ob)spamd; these are the instructions I was following:
http://www.freebsddiary.org/pf.php (As you may know, this spamd is now
known as obspamd under FreeBSD so as to avoid confusion with the
spamassassin spamd).

At this point, unless you have any brilliant ideas on how the two can
cohabitate, I suppose I should pursue this further on the freebsd
list.

The system is a gateway/server for my home LAN. I am the boss so no
one can fire me if anything goes wrong. ;)
