Hi Sportsman -

Can anyone help an ignorant newbie with the right commands and info please.

The Rootkit Hunter main project page (rkhunter.sourceforge.net) has a very
good FAQ to help new users with most (if not all) of the basics of Rootkit
Hunter. Other good sources of security procedures are any major Linux
forums like linuxquestions.org (just go into the security forum).

Regards,

Mike
