I am using the most recent version: rkhunter-1.4.0.tar.gz, downloaded from
sourceforge.
I get this error prior to doing any modifications of any kind to any
files. All I am doing in gunzip'ing, running installer, then at step 3
below I get the error:
1) gunzip -dc rkhunter-1.4.0.tar.gz |tar -xvf -
2) ./installer.sh --layout custom . --install
3) ./rkhunter --propupd --check --sk
ERROR) ./rkhunter: line 15744: syntax error near unexpected token `('
