Hi John,
I installed version 1.3.8-10 from the Canonical repo using "apt-get"
Now i have it removed as you mentioned and from the latest 1.4.0 tar 
extracted the contents.
while running the ./installer.sh --install "
the output is:

# rkhunter --versioncheck
