Hello,
I did a complete uninstall of rkhunter, removed it completely from my server,
downloaded the tar.gz file again from the website, and re-installed it. When I
ran the update I got the same error I have been getting with backdoorports.dat
([ Update failed ]) and this in the /var/log/rkhunter.log:

[14:25:51] Info: Executing download command '/usr/bin/wget -q -O
"/var/lib/rkhunter/tmp/rkhunter.upd.cssTY17212"
http://rkhunter.sourceforge.net/1.3/backdoorports.dat 2>/dev/null'
[14:34:11] Warning: Download of 'backdoorports.dat' failed: Unable to determine
the latest version number.
[14:34:11] Checking file backdoorports.dat [ Update failed ]

So it does not appear to be anything wrong with my installation of rkhunter
1.4.2. Later on I had to do a reboot and force a file system check of the
server for another issue so I tried the --propupd and --update again after
that, but I'm still getting the same errors.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a serious problem (update failed on
this one .dat file) or can I overlook it?

Many thanks,
Julie

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried removing backdoorports.dat and
rerunning 'rkhunter --update', but I got the same error. I am going to try
un-installing and re-installing rkhunter 1.4.2.
Thanks,
Julie

Delete the backdoorports.dat file, and then run 'rkhunter --update' to allow it
to download a new copy. looks like your current copy may be corrupted.
