i've been absent for some time, but i'm following the postings. i'm happy i've 
made some progress, too:

consider this closed once and for all. i implemented direct PDF output in the 
very R function the above plugin is calling, using texi2dvi() from the tools 
package. your hints to move the system calls to R code were really inspiring, 
thomas :-)

i've discarded the merging of all PDF files into one (pdftk), since it was the 
last feature that would have needed any system calls (and a rather superfluous 
one). that said, i've already fully succeeded in the transition from PHP to JS 
and don't rely on the PHP backend any longer. as far as i'm concerned it can 
savely be removed.
