hi all, build 26 has been released. some cool things in this release, such as: * upgraded rpm to 3.0.6 this allows us to read newer rpm packages, such as those in redhat 7.0 and mandrake 7.2. * added redmond update util an awesomely cool feature borrowed from mandrake, we can now update your redmond linux installation over the net. this means that you won't have to wait for a CD or download 500M to get the latest build. just fire up redmond update and you will be shown all the packages that are newer, and you can download those and install them. * i need this tested. does it work? * * upgraded realplayer to 8 realplayer 8 is the latest version. this version crashes on me when i try to pause. does it for anyone else? please let me know. * upgraded netscape to 4.76 this netscape is the latest in the 4.x series of netscape. we won't be moving to netscape 6, we'll be moving straight to mozilla when it's ready. * changed bootloader screen to show redmond linux when probing the process of getting rid of the caldera logo is one step closer. now redmond linux is shown when probing hardware when you install. * upgraded X to 4.0.2 on high-end systems, i can tell the difference. the desktop is definitely faster. it's supposedly more stable and with better hardware support, but i haven't checked yet. for some reason, i can't tell a difference on older systems. * added hardware probing! this is a big one! now when you click on "My Linux System" you will be shown all of your floppy drives and CDROM's. these will change with you as you add and remove hardware, it's completely dynamic. right-click on them and you can format [floppy] or eject [cdrom] them. some things need testing: - does anyone have multiple floppy drives? see if they both show up. some bugs: - cdrom's won't show up correctly after the initial redmond linux installation. you will need to reboot to get them to look right. - only the *last* cdrom on boxes with more than one cdrom will autoplay. this means if you have two cdroms and stick a cd in the first one, nothing will happen [you can still see it when you click on My Linux System tho]. i'm not sure how to fix this, at least not easily. hopefully hard drives and ZIP drives will show up in the next release. now it's only floppies and cdroms. please test this! * got rid of annoying diamond at end of each print job this was bugging me. after each print job i would get a page with a diamond on it. now it's gone. and, of course, there are lots of other "under the hood" changes. we didn't change the desktop, and we didn't upgrade to final 2.4.0 kernel; those will come later. we're about a third of the way to our next milestone, beta 2 refresh. i expect that release will be somewhere around build 40. i'm going to demo redmond linux next week to linuxcare in san francisco. this will be the first time they've seen it. wish me luck! enjoy! -- thanks! joe -- Joseph Cheek, Sr Linux Consultant, Linuxcare | http://www.linuxcare.com/ Linuxcare.
