Hi all:
I know it is a bit late for integrating XFree 4.2 with the installer (depending on how much the conf files and behaviour changed, maybe not) for build 44, but since XFree 4.2 will be out in some days, would it be a good idea to include rpms for that in the RL CDs ? Even X CVS would probably do. Some people don't have decent internet connections for upgrading, and there are some new cards that pose some problems to the now old XFree 4.1 so the ones with very new cards would be able to upgrade by hand. For example I had problems with a radeon mobility new revision, wich I had to use with the "vesa" driver. Another thing that comes to my mind is that I had a problem with a nvidia card in a test machine at my work , rl wouldn't boot on normal nor at safe mode. Also at my cousins' computer with an ATI Rage 3D card it would only boot at safe mode. Safe mode in RL as far as I could see is the vga driver for XFree 4.1 . Why doesn't the installer try the vesa driver ? That should work with most cards (vesa 2.0) and at least is SVGA, ie, has some accel built in. Also the fbdev XFree 4.1 driver should work with most cards. With vga16 running it is impossible even to open the kde menus without having to wait seconds ! My sugesstion is that the installer should try to use other modes (vesa and fbdev) than vga before . Running 1024x786 vesa or fbdev is not bad if you can't have a specific driver working. Any thoughts about this ? Keep up the good work Gustavo -- "640 Kb ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates, 1981 - -- rl-users list.
