Folks,

First, let me explain this message. In some fashion you have indicated
to us that you would like to receive notification of developments
regarding the shutdown of Fleischmann Planetarium. If this is not the
case, please let me know, and I'll drop your name from the list and
apologize. Thanks!

There are a couple events coming up that supporters of Fleischmann
Planetarium might be interested in attending. The first is a Reno Town
Hall meeting, the first of several, at City Hall next Tuesday, Jan. 9,
at 7:00 p.m. This one will be hosted by Mayor Bob Cashell. It was
suggested to us (no, I didn't make the suggestion: I didn't even know
about the meeting!) that someone might want to ask city officials if
plans for creating a new science center were going forward (of course,
Reno is not the only city involved in this project, but it's their
meeting next week). I have heard that negotiations are in fact going
forward to some extent, so if I were asked, I would recommend not being
obstreperous in any expressions at such a meeting, but rather to show
enthusiastic support for the notion of building a science center
wherever it could best go; but I haven't been asked, so I won't
recommend anything.

Another meeting, perhaps more to the point as far as the immediate
situation is concerned, is a meeting of Reno's Historical Resources
Committee. This committee's purpose is "to act as the official advisor
to the City of Reno on matters relating to the historic preservation of
cultural resources and buildings. The Commission recommends to the
Council possible uses and funding options for historic buildings,
places and sites." The committee's next meeting will be held Thursday,
Jan. 9, at 3:00 p.m., at McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925
Riverside Drive. I have discovered that one of the agenda items is
"Discuss and recommend any actions of support for the Fleischmann
Planetarium Building at the University of Nevada-Reno." I know that at
least one member of the committee believes the planetarium should be
preserved, so this looks like a friendly meeting. I'm just picturing in
my mind what it would look like if we packed the room with planetarium
supporters. Not that I'm telling you what to do, of course... If any of
you have any interesting ideas, or know that you plan to be at the
meeting, I'd be interested in hearing from you. If enough supporters
plan to show up, who knows? someone might even leak it to some newsome
sort of person or other.

Finally: if you know of someone whose name should be included in
mailings like this one, please let me know (get the person's approval
first!), and I'll add him/her in. And if you know anyone who might be
interested in the above meetings, by all means let them know. Thanks
for your support!
