Andy, A quick search through the mailing list archives doesn't say anything about hot swapping drive bays. You should take a look for yourself:
http://freebsd.org/search/search.html I got a floppy cable for my Compaq Evo N600c, which is "hot plug" via the parallel port, which under Freebsd 4.7 seems to give my laptop a stomach ache. I'd imagine you'd get the same problem hot swapping drive bays, as floppies/cdroms seem to be detected at boottime. If you really need Hot swap support, you should run a windows xp host and put freebsd in VMware so you can do hotswap.
