Just throwing out a Devils Advocate view.
First and foremost I agree with SCP being the best way to do transfers.
Having said that. When people find out that I use Linux for a primary Workstation as
well as a server platform people often ask me - as they often ask all of you, Should I
change to Linux? There is a question that needs to be answered here. Your mother or
grandmother who knows absolutely nothing about Linux or windows. Goes and buys a
computer. What OS do you want on it. Now before you answer that question, remember
that she lives far away. Weather it is 30 miles or 300 miles either way it is very
inconvenient for you to go over there to visit. And she only uses the computer while
you are at work anyway. She can get help from a friend or the senior center. Now
what OS do you want her using. Sure we can send her to the LUG, but they are not
created equal. After spending some time in Dallas I know if you aren't an expert they
don't want you there. Many of them are like that...Good 'ol boys and all that.
You may be asking me why am I stating this. It is very presumptuous of us
Linux users to assume that the new Linux users are willing to look online and do any
research at all. My mother comes to mind. She has never used anything other than
Eudora for email (not judging the clients here) and I now live in Reno. I don't use
Eudora but I am expected to support it. My father uses either outlook or outlook
express. They can get help from a host of places using outlook or outlook express,
but Eudora help is very limited...and lets not mention if I say ok telnet into the
server and use pine. I am sure you see where I am going.
(apologies to Roy for making some very bold assumptions)
So lets say that Roy calls upon the RLUG and asks "Anybody have any experience
setting up proftpd or wu-ftp? I would like to be able to have some people upload &
update some html on my
webserver and figure ftp would be best. Though, I hear ssh & scp(?) is a better
solution."
We respond with the best solution but tell him that the world will not end if
he doesn't use it.
"Don't use ftp. Let me underscore this: _Don't use FTP_" (apologies to Mark)
We often fail to remember that we are telling the Admin the best way to handle
it and throw him/her to the wolves (the end user). We don't know the caliber of user
that will be using his web server. They my only be trading photos online anyway.
Besides (I may be wrong) we can lock down directory access pretty easily with proftp.
in fact it is pretty robust itself with security. And finally we have all been there
when we have to support an application that we know little or nothing about. So
perhaps the LUG'ers should remember that the most secure is not always the best.

I'm running Red Hat Linux 8 w/apt-get_synaptic, so it would be really
easy to get the software I need. ( I didn't install everything when I
first installed red hat...)
