I don't know what window manager you are using, but the "lock screen" feature
usually calls one of two programs: xlock or xscreensaver

I usually just run xlock from a shell, and that locks the screen.
Double check to see if it is installed: 

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# rpm -q xlockmore  
xlockmore-4.17.2-5

xscreensaver, written by the infamous jwz (netscape fame), requires that an
xscreensaver daemon is running first, then you can run:
xscreensaver -lock
