The Sambar server is pretty nice. I ran it for a while before I switched
most of my services to Freebsd. Of course, Sambar has this horrible
problem that it is closed source and is authored by one person (last I
checked). No plugins either.

I don't know. I've never been a big fan of Java, especially not on the
server. Not to knock Java, of course. It has it's place; running my java
applets.

I haven't even heard of James. I think your friend should really look
into running separate services under Linux in the long run. Of course,
if all he needs is simple stuff, maybe James would cut it. 

I've been looking at RHSD (http://rhems.sourceforge.net/rhems.htm) here
and there, but haven't tried it yet (it is Redhat only). This could be
another solution.
