Would it be worth looking into using LTSP to make the clients dumb (the machines not the users) and then make a more robust server and/or cluster?

I don't recommend a PII as a desktop machine, as any of the slick looking GUI toolkits like KDE or Gnome are painfully slow on a PII. For the most part, a PII server wouldn't require any maintenance, other than normal patching and security updates. The PIII's are definitely what we need for a smooth desktop for these guys.
