I downloaded and burned Knoppix. Damn spiffy job they've done. Didn't have to do any tweaking at all - even net access was up and running (all the info is on my hardware router).

The hard drive, though, is gibberish. It can be read just fine, but it's nothing but nonsensical files and directories. So the data is pretty much a loss, the worst part of it was the loss of e-mail, but nothing too critical. I'm going to do a Debian reinstall on there over the weekend and make sure it can install to the hard drive without any problems, else I'll get a new hard drive. From there I am trying to ponder if I want to install Libranet, Debian testing/unstable, or try out Gentoo - I just don't want to redo the tweaking I had to do with Debian stable to get it to a useable condition.

If nothing else, it's been a learning experience. Thanks for everyone's help.

maybe finding one of those distros to where I can run Linux off of a CD (suggestions, anyone?), try to access the drive, and get the important hard to replace data. Totally download Knoppix, it is worth the long download. Pop the disk in
and it should see all your ext2 partitions and mount them for you. From
there, you can set up your Internet connection with your SBC service and
you'll be able to move your important files else ware.

As far as back up, if you have important stuff, you might want to rig a
cron job to rsync them somewhere else every few days. It isn't a good
method to back up, but it is mindless enough to the point where I don't
have to worry about a disk crash.
