1. Ok, so you have a dual boot WinXP / Mandrake system and you can't get
mandrake to read your windows partition.

Question, have you loaded the experimental NTFS file system reader,
unless you have your XP partition set up as fat32 you will need to get
the NTFS filesystem reader.

2. I then tried to use a usb drive and the system froze.

Dunno, anyone else have some suggestions here?

3. I was using Evolution and lost the ability to send. I was doing this
as
root so I changed to a user. Then again I lost the ability to send mail
from evolution as a user vice root. Now both root and user evolution
would not send.

I've found that evolution is buggy, real buggy.... Crashes all the time
and looses settings.

4. An E-mail recipient told me his Norton said it got a virus from me.

Yeah, most likely not... the current virus flavors of the week are
particularly good at making it seem as though a friend of yours or
someone you know has sent you mail with the virus attachment. But
usually that is not the case. Most likely the virus spam was just sent
with your name in the from header.

5. As for the rest. Yes the NSA has located you and you can expect that
they will be knocking on your door only seconds after reading this
e-mail.

Linux is connected to the Internet.

I loaded Mandrake Linux on a dual boot system. Mandrake would not read
XP
files so I loaded Xandros Linux on top of Mandrake. Xandros took over
most
of the Mandrake file space but not all.

I then tried to use a usb drive and the system froze.

I was using Evolution and lost the ability to send. I was doing this as
root so I changed to a user.

Then again I lost the ability to send mail from evolution as a user vice
root. Now both root and user evolution would not send.

An E-mail recipient told me his Norton said it got a virus from me.

I went to the Xandros update and updated Xandros. Instead it deleted
all
the programs it was to update including openoffice and evolution.

I backed up all the files I had worked on. When I checked the backup,
all
data files I had worked on while I was using Linux were deleted.

I used Partition Commander and repartitioned the Hard Drive deleting the
Mandrake, Xandros and Linux swap file; and reinstalled Xandros.

Either, A) I do not know what I am doing (probably)

B) NSA has found me

C) dito Romulans

D) something evil got into my hard drive.

I suspect D) and before I try to use Linux again I need to prevent D. I
was
using Firestarter as a firewall. I did try to install F-Prot, but I
suspect
that instead of being a Windows user no action install, it requires the
user
to do something that I didn't do. So I am trying to find a anti virus
or
something that will prevent D) and I can actually use Linux on a
workstation. I think that I didn't set up Linux properly last time, but
I
am too much of a newbee to know what I did wrong.

All the best.

So, you are looking for a virus scanner to scan attachments in your
Linux email client, or look for trojans you may have downloaded?

A quick Google revealed that there are virus scanners for Linux, but I'm
at a loss as far as what they would actually do. I haven't heard of any
Linux virii, but it is practical that they could exist. As far as I
know, the big problem with Linux, or any Unix, are trojans and script
kiddies, both of which can be avoided with checksum/hashes, security
updates, and Puffy the Blowfish.

Am I wrong here? Someone please correct me :)
