Boot with the install disk, mount the root partition on your hard
drive. Use vi to edit the line for root so it looks something like:
root::0:0::/root:/bin/bash
That is, remove the password field immediately following the username.
Remove the install disk, reboot, login as root (no password) and reset
the root password with passwd.

That's certainly the safest way depending upon who owns the system. If
he isn't the systems sole owner I would advise him to resist the

I know your not in Oregon but this is a little frightening none the
less. Anyone needing to recover a password or planning a security scan
on a system should read this. (not to mention any security practitioners
planning to practice in Oregon).
