Well, I was not able to get a useful response from VMWare support, nor could I find a solution in the knowledge base or boards.
My solution finally was to roll back to the snapshot and re-install several pieces of software.... make sure it was all functioning and that I could boot without a problem (several times - 'cuz I don't trust Billyware) then make a new snapshot in case it happens again. What a pain - but at least now I have an image that works and can be brought back as needed. If you are using VMWare and haven't done a snapshot - I heartily encourage you to do one. It beats the alternative. I think after my busy season I'm going to try this with Fedora or Debian.
