I've had exceptional luck with Toshibas and Linux (as well as *BSD), and
there are a lot of 3rd party open-source add-ons for Toshibas for you to
control the screen brightness, CPU fan speed, Tablet, etc. On the
downside, Toshiba notebooks tend to find a way to break on their own, so
get a good warranty if you go this route.

Another key thing to look for is video cards on the laptop. ATI and
Nvidia cards work really well, but some sub-notebooks only ship with the
Trident "cyberblade" or Intel video chips which give mixed results.
