##### Thanks everyone. I think I have enough information to make a good buying decision. I probably won't have anything before the next meeting, but I will certainly have something for the following meeting. BTW...I have ordered a new 15" PowerBook 1.67Ghz G4 with super drive and 1Gb of RAM. I was way overdue in updating my primary system.

Are you looking for new or used? I definitely recommend the
Thinkpad and the Vaio models... and if you're really on the
road a lot, nothing beat a super-slim profile. :-)

##### New, Used, Refurbished---makes not difference. I develop custom database on the Macintosh and test them on a PC if my client is Windows based. However, when I go to my clients site, I would like to be able to carry a PC laptop. Even thought the database will run on either platform, they do not display exactly the same.

I bought my big honkin IBM A30p off ebay almost two years ago
for $1200... nice 1600x1200 display, 1.2Ghz processor, 40GB
HDD (which died)... 1GB ram..

##### I have tried and I simply cannot use the "joy stick" on IBMs. I need something with a "scratch pad". That's what all the Macintoshes have and what I learned to use.

##### My main concern is to get something that will work well with Linux or FreeBSD.

Be sure to check out Linux-on-Laptops before you buy:

##### Yes! I had stumbled into that site some time ago but couldn't remember the URL. Thanks!

I've had exceptional luck with Toshibas and Linux (as well as *BSD), and
there are a lot of 3rd party open-source add-ons for Toshibas for you to
control the screen brightness, CPU fan speed, Tablet, etc. On the
downside, Toshiba notebooks tend to find a way to break on their own, so
get a good warranty if you go this route.

##### Good information to know.

Another key thing to look for is video cards on the laptop. ATI and
Nvidia cards work really well, but some sub-notebooks only ship with the
Trident "cyberblade" or Intel video chips which give mixed results.

##### This is the kind of stuff I really was looking for so I wouldn't get something with some level of incompatibility.
