I've seen audio decoding devices that plug directly into ethernet. If you
can find one, you could decentralize your file server from your
entertainment system by streaming audio straight to the device. Then
again, it might be cheaper/easier to use a Linux box to decode streaming
audio. Gumstix now have an audio expansion card, and they're not very
expensive http://www.gumstix.com.
Just a thought. I'm a fan of keeping noisy servers in the closet. Then
again, an MP3 server should be pretty quiet. *ugh* too many options.

If it doesn't support output through the sound card, get the Linux

Subject: [RLUG] MP3 server
I was thinking about building a Linux box to server MP3 over my home
stereo. I want to be able to do the playlists over a web interface (no
keyboard, mouse or monitor at the box). Linspire has an MP3Beamer that
works well but I don't know if it can output to a stereo. Typically
that device outputs to the laptop or desktop that connected to it's web
interface. I found a TON of examples but wanted to know if any of you
had opinions on this matter. I have a huge CD collection that I want to
rip so that needs to be considered as well but that is less important.
