When I installed Ubuntu - I set up my system as a dual boot. I have twin 160 Gb drives with Suse on sda* and Ubuntu on sdb*. I copied my /home/$user directories on Suse over to a slush directory on Ubuntu.

Also - downloaded Skype ran dpkg -i "skypepackage.deb" It looks like it installed, shows on the menu but does NOT run when selected. AND strangely enough, when I type locate skype* I get nothing, nada, zip.

When I search for it in Synaptic - it shows the package as installed.

WTF is going on here?? (Learning the quirks of a new distro is so annoying!!)

Check to see if the skype or any other pkg you're missing is in the /usr/bin file. If so, you can make a shortcut from that, to get it started. I think you can just drag it to your desktop or menu. However, with Gnome, you have to use the middle mouse button to get the shortcut/copy/move option.

Hopeful this helps.

BTW, which Ubuntu version are you using?

Subject: Re: [RLUG] changing distros

Hey Dennis,

I don't use evolution -- so I'm taking a wild stab here. It should be
possible to export your mail/etc from evolution on Suse into a file that
can be easily imported into evolution on Ubuntu. This should be a
function of the evolution software.

Wait! Is Suse still running? I'm confused.

Hey gang,

I'm in the process of changing distros from Suse to Ubuntu. I have a copy of everything from the Suse /home directory and want to do a few "simple" conversions like:

Transfer my contacts and old pop mail from the Suse version of Evolution

Re-install VMware.

The Evolution issue though seems a bit sticky....

Suse put the Evolution data files under the directory Evolution within /home/$user.

Apparently Ubuntu takes a different approach. Or do I have to set up Evolution in Ubuntu first to create the necessary stuff in the /home/$user?

Anybody have info on this?????

Thanks

Dennis
