DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
Unless UNR has changed the fine print you cannot have a club that has
membership made of non-students. This is why RLUG has never been
formally associated with UNR.
I also see this idea as being a problem. Having UNR involved in RLUG affairs
will most certainly get the man on our backs. I think we need to seek a
better solution than registering RLUG as a UNR club, as it is really intended
as a community group for Reno and the surrounding areas.
An idea that I have is there could be an student UNR-CS ACM sponsored chapter
of RLUG, which could occasionally host RLUG meetings with non-UNR guests 11
months out of the year (month 12 being the Christmas party, of course). Think
of it as one of the SIGs that the student UNR-CS ACM tried to start a few
years back.
I'm not married to the idea of making RLUG a UNR club. But, I fail to see
how affliation with the University as a means of securing a meeting space
changes our community/organization's identity.
With that stated, I would like to acknowlege my own concern over being
associated with the ASUN. If we became a UNR club, I don't like that we
could be ruled over by student-government policies. I have no qualms
adhearing to Title IX regulations, or having a faculty advisor (the club
constitution can completely elimate their power), but I don't want to
fight the student beuaracracy over any matter of possible nonsense they
spew forth that would attempt to regulate our community.
Off that topic... funny that you mention the ACM! I talked with Colin
King (ACM President) last week about having him schedule a room for us in
the event that the University gives us problems. He said it wouldn't be a
problem. So, perhaps we could con him into doing it for a full year.
I'll confirm that we won't cause problems, or be subject to regulations
due to their charter membership with the ACM... I'm sure it won't be an
issue.
I'll post the results as soon as I get a response.
