Here's an update on my data recovery situation:

There's two drives that I'm trying to copy files off, hda and hdb.
Both drives were having read/write errors in my friends computer. I
was able to get about 7 - 10 GB of data from each before the errors
started occurring. So I put the drives, on at a time, into one of my
computers. I was then able to copy every file from hda without errors.
hdb, however, is now in the freezer. I wasn't even able to mount the
drive. While the kernel detected it, nothing could read it, not even
fdisk.

I hope this freezer thing works out. The most recent files are on hdb,
and I only got about half of them before the drive croaked on me. If
it does, I will be amazed. I tried running a surface scan on hdb, and
the drive just kept spinning up and down for about 15 mins, and it
crashed the scan program!

Also, I have found that using rsync in this situation is really nice.
Since I'm not exactly sure what files I was able to copy my first
attempt, I can save time in future attempts by having rsync only copy
files that are different.

Fingers crossed,
Grant
