Maybe the --with-lustre=/... option doesn't work properly. I didn't use
it for a long time.
Can you try with lustre or lustre-client installed on your EL6 clients?
Or your can build on any el6 host having one of those packages.

I have tried to get lustre to compile on the client thinking that was the
issue however this doesnt work:
./configure ‹enable-lustre --with-lustre=/src/lustre-2.9.53_46_gf548d1a
And shows this on a Centos 7 system (the one running the server):
configure: Summary:
configure: Lustre support is ON
configure: Backup support is ON
configure: Lustre/HSM support is ON
However on the Centos 6 client build system:
configure: Summary:
configure: Lustre support is OFF
configure: Backup support is OFF
configure: Lustre/HSM support is OFF

We have our server on Centos 7.3 but the clients are on Centos 6.6
If the users try to use rbh-df it shows:
2017/12/04 12:28:07 [55065/1] CheckFS | Root id changed! Previous
value: '0xad00001:0x95823b97:0x0', new value: '77E730C5/181403649'
This looks like a robinhood-posix client instance that queries a
robinhood-lustre server.
Installing a robinhood-lustre rpm on your clients should fix this.
The client works fine on the server and on Centos 7 systems. Is there
a way to get this working as a client on Centos 6?
No difference is expected between el6 and el7. Maybe your client was not
built with lustre support enabled.
