The goal of orogen_metadata was to provide a place for the tooling / modelling to expose information about ports and properties such as ranges and e.g. frames without having to encode it in the data (which is baaaad).
So, yes, it is meant to be used the way it is documented. For now, only Matthias is using it AFAIK. As for the polluting, we should in principle :"hide" the property and display it as metadata on the ports / properties. I would imagine that we can expose the metadata information through an API that is equivalent to the metadata API in the log files so that the task inspector can show metadata for both task types without "knowing" about how it is stored / retrieved.
