More info: Originally I had the wrong jdbc driver being used with PG 8.0.3 in Tomcat. However, I went back and retried from scratch (including recreation of db) with no luck.
I can see my newly registered user in the pg db with a password. The user roles also indicate I have 'admin' and 'editor' privileges.
