That's just what's been said:)
Unless you use your own code, start completely from scratch, you're
required legally to credit rom with the code they've done.. 
I might add that IF a certain percentage of the code is changed( I
really do forget how much, because it's been too long since I looked
into it myself), then you MAY copyright the code yourself, HOWEVER,
you're still under the Rom copyright as well. Basically, all
copyrighting your code does is give you the added protection there.
However, it's been entirely too long since I looked into that.
