European politicians and businessmen led by Susanne
Kastner, vice-president of the German parliament, visited the cities of Arad and
Sibiu riding motorcycles as part of a humanitarian tour.
The tour was
organized by a bikers club in Germany. The event marks the first occasion for a
high-powered humanitarian convoy to visit Romania to raise money for
charity.
Kastner said she drove to Arad because she had trouble riding a bike and added that their mission had a noble objective. Calin Albu, spokesman of the Arad County Prefect's Office, said the humanitarian mission hoped to raise money for orphanages in Romania. The bikers also brought with them sanitary supplies for several hospitals.
The motorcycle and automobile convoy entered the country through Nadlac border check point and halted in Lipova, where they made the first donations to a homeless center.
The donation included medical equipment, furniture and more than 10,000 euros in cash.
The convoy will leave Romania on May 25 after halts in Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca and Satu-Mare.
