Bucharest - Romanian President Traian Basescu said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he expects a wave of potential immigrants from neighbouring Moldova as a result of Romania's recent accession to the European Union. In the interview on Romania's Pro TV broadcaster, Basescu said the only way to stop the migration trend was if Moldova's citizens were to receive 'a European perspective.' He was recently had a discussion in Brussels with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Vice President Franco Frattini about this and other issues, he said. According to Basescu, there were currently around 800,000 applications from Moldovans for Romanian citizenship, while a total 1.5 million applications are expected by the end of the year. Moldova's entire population is only 3.8 million. On another issue, Basescu said it was possible that the EU protection clause on justice would be activated if the country failed to found as promised the National Agency for Integrity (ANI), through which politicians assets would to be investigated. The implementation of the justice clause would mean that the European Union would not recognize any the country's judicial decisions. This would not only be a disadvantage for the country but for foreign investors, he said. The planned agency would be allowed to investigate the financial dealings of politicians through access to their accounts and property. The Romanian parliament has so far stood against the ANI, saying the organization would create in an unconstitutional manner an investigative organization that would stand in competition with the public prosecutor's office.
