Attn: His Excellency Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering President of the European
Parliament

Re: St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cathedral Complex,
17-19 General Berthelot Street, Bucharest , Romania

Your Excellency and distinguished Guest,

We enjoy to greet your incoming visit in Romania, one of the last countries,
recently joining the European Union!

We hope your stay in our country to be a happy and successful, as well!

Since modern Romania was the masterpiece of the first king of our country
Carl von Hohenzollern (Carol I of Romania), we are very hopeful that the
present German presidency of the European Parliament will help Romania to be
closer to the other countries, to faster adopt rules and regulations.

In this respect I join my voice to those of thousands of other Romanians,
irrespective of the religion (Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Greek Catholics and
even atheists) who fight to protect the Roman Catholic St. Joseph Cathedral
in Bucharest, endangered by an inappropriate construction, erected too close
to this historical and architectural monument.

The St. Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest, designed by the famous Viennese
architect Friedrich von Schmidt was built during 1873-1884.

Pope John Paul II was warmly received by all the Romanians in May 1999 in
this Cathedral, a very special and historical moment among so many others in
his ecumenical mission.

I kindly ask you, to use your high authority and convince our authorities:
Presidency, Government, Parliament that it is a need to dismount this
building, which represents a defy against any regulation regarding the
height regime and the imposed distance to protect the historical monuments.

I consider our position a moral duty of any responsible citizen of the
European Community, according to the Art. 49 of the European Constitution
"Participative Citizenship".

I hope you'll discover a warm European people, open to progress, hospitable
and optimistic for the future of Romania!
Have a good time in our country!

Thank you for your kind understanding!
