Romanian authorities received no request to reopen a contested gold mine project in Baia Mare (NW Romania) recently, Romania's Environment Minister Laszlo Borbely told MTI on Wednesday. Borbely denied press reports which claimed that the gold mine which caused an ecological disaster in 2000 would reopen. Borbely met his Hungarian counterpart Imre Szabo in Budapest earlier on Wednesday and told him that Romania had rejected plans by a Russian company for reopening the mine back in 2007. "As long as all European Union and Romanian environmental criteria are not met, reopening the mine is out of the question," Borbely said. The company had been given until the end of 2010 to meet a set of requirements, some of which are nearing completion, while others are far from being ready, the Romanian minister said. Currently there is no danger of pollution from the mine, which used to apply a cyanide-leach technology before its closure, Borbely added. Borbely also confirmed that his ministry had not taken steps to resume its investigation concerning the environmental impacts of another gold mine project in Rosia Montana, which was suspended in 2007, said a statement issued by the Hungarian Environment Ministry after the meeting. In 2000 a cyanide spill from the Baia Mare gold mine nearly wiped out all wildlife in the river Tisza which flows into Hungary.
