you wouldn't, and shouldn't.

from the original posting, it read as if the author was not using  
triggers at all in his db.

he said that the columns were functions of a number -- to me, that  
suggests 'variations' -- not that the column values were inserted by  
a trigger using functions.

i'm a big fan of as-much-in-the-db-as-possible.
