Soren's response makes sense... you need several different types of diagrams to model a system.  That being said, there are certain diagrams that your model should include, and some others that are optional.... a UML-lite model if you will.

 

Use Case diagrams to capture functionality, Class diagrams for the static view, and either the Collaboration or Sequence diagrams for the dynamic view.  All-in-all, 3 types of diagrams capture most, is not all, of a system's properties.

 

Don't get me wrong, Component, Activity and State Chart diagrams are useful too, but I can live without these  diagrams as long as I have the first 3 I mentioned.

 

I've worked on successful projects whose process dictated the creation of Use Case, Class, and Sequence diagrams only.

Hi Maarten

Well, the point is (IMHO) that no single diagram is *the* most important diagram. Modeling a system most often means creating different views on the system. You can depict static structure with class diagrams, you can depict dynamic structure with sequence diagrams and so on.

So, the short answers is: you ask the wrong question :-)
